Due to land use change and its consequence rangeland degradation, evaluation of production changes is important. Vegetation cover of rangeland’s data is usually rare and should be collected. To bold the impotance of rangeland vegetation cove and production the study is setup. To reveal the efficiency of plant characteristics in natural rangelands and plowed and/or abandoned rangelands, three areas of semi-steppe rangelands in Chaharmahal & Bakhtiari province selected to evaluate the changes in production and vegetation cover. Plots of size 2 * 2 meters at the center and four quadrats in four main directions around it (150 quadrates per region) were put in place, a total of 450 quadrates. Data were collected within the same pattern for three areas of the province during field operations. Measurements of production variables (double sampling mehtod) and vegetation cover (using lattice plots method) were conducted from June 25 to July 25, 2014. Images were enhanced and processed using 17 vegetation indices for all images. Then, the values computed via vegetation indices for regression were compared with land true values of plant production and crown cover. The results showed that the NRVI, CTVI, RATIO, TTVI, and TVI indexes with the values of R2 equal to 0.637, 0.637, 0.633, 0.636, 0.636, respectively, were the best vegetation indices for the study of vegetation status. Also, the mentioned indices with correlation coefficients of 0.703, 0.703, 0.703, 0.703, 0.704 and R2 values of 0.35 have the most correlation with plant production among the used indices. NRVI was considered as the best indicator for vegetation mapping (third grade equation). For the production map degree equation was used. It is generally concluded that the production and vegetation of these areas with relatively high accuracy can be estimated by vegetation indices from Landsat 8 satellite imagery.
