Microbial activities are the most dynamic soil characteristics and are considered as indicators of soil health. The aim of the study is evaluating the effect of various plant coverings on soil microbial activities and nitrogen mineralization dynamic. Six types of plant species including: (1) Crataegus microphylla C. Koch., (2) Berberis integerrima Bunge., (3) Ribes Uva – crispa L., (4) Prunus spinosa L., (5) rangeland cover with dominant Lecokia cretica (Lam.) DC., Orchis mascula L., Cardamine bulbifera (L.) Crantz and (6) rangeland covers with dominance of Fragaria vesca L., in the Diakooh mountainous site, south-east of Nowshahr city, were considered for the study. A total of 15 soil samples from each plant type were transferred to the laboratory and physic-chemical characters, microbial activities (i.e. basal and induced respiration, microbial biomass of carbon, nitrogen and phosphorous) and nitrogen mineralization dynamic (i.e. net rates of ammonification, nitrification and nitrogen mineralization) were measured. The results indicate that the shrubs have higher microbial activity, net ammonification (summer) and nitrification (both summer and fall) rates, which are related to higher clay, humidity and also fertility under these land cover. Whereas, non-wooded rangelands generally have lower microbial activity and mineralization processes. The results of this research can provide valuable information on the ecological condition and nutrient cycle in mountainous habitats.
