Iran Pastoralists’ Guild Association (PGA) has been established since 2011 to promot sustainability of rangeland management systems. The main purpose of PGA is supporting pastoralists’ rights and improving rangeland exploiters livelihood. Although PGA has lots of benefits, many weaknesses and challenges is associated to it’s functionalities. The aim of this study was to determine the PGA strategies by identifying their strengths, weaknesses, opportunities and threats in the SWOT framework. At the first step, affecting factors on PGA’s activities were identified through conducting individual interviews and executing SWOT workshops. As the second step, 202 extracted factors of different criteria were summarized into 86 factors (20 S, 32 W, 17 O and 17 T) through a workshop consists of experts, faculty member of the PGA and pastoralists representatives. At the third step, whole of the summarized factors were given weights and prioritized through a semi-structural questionnaire which its validity and reliability had been proved. Questionnaires were distributed among 320 respondents (executive managers and experts, guilds’ members and guild’s faculty members). At the last step, data were analyzed based on SWOT strategic analysis method and strategic position of pastoralists’ PGA identified based on Internal Factors (IF, strengths and weaknesses) and External Factors (EF, Opportunities and Threats) final weights. Through findings, “the role of pastoralists’ PGA as the linking path and facilitator between executive organizations and pastoralists” was introduced as the most important strength, and “deficiency of government financial support to encourage the launch phase and its effect on pastoralists’ guild association functions” was recognized as the most important weakness. Also, “high number of graduated students in rangeland management field of study in the country and their potential for activity and supporting of guild association” and “lack of mutual relationship between guild associations and natural resources institutions” were introduced with the highest priority in opportunities and threats, respectively. Strategic position of pastoralists’ guild associations was determined as offensive situation which means using of potential opportunities to enforce and application of existence strengths.
